Mandate

Four duties established in the By-Laws.

To conduct scientific research; to generate and disseminate reliable data; to provide training and education; and to advise the Ministry on the sustainable use of marine and fisheries resources.

Mandate in operation

1. Research

Marine ecosystems, fisheries resources, oceanography, aquaculture and the coastal environment.

2. Data

Generate, analyse and disseminate reliable scientific data for policy and conservation.

3. Educate

Training, education and capacity development for the marine and fisheries sectors.

4. Advise

Scientific and technical advice to the Ministry on sustainable use of the resource.

Laboratories, research vessels, hatcheries and field stations to the extent of available resources.

National databases

Collect, manage and safeguard scientific data and maintain marine and fisheries databases.
